Packaging fulfills far more than just a protective function. It conveys attitude, attracts attention, arouses curiosity, and reflects design trends. Packaging serves as a stage on which brands showcase their visions. The new and second edition of the trend boxes from LEONHARD KURZ, ‘60° – creative boxes to inspire,’ picks up on current design trends and translates them into exciting concepts. The trend boxes will be presented for the first time at LUXE PACK 2025 in Monaco. Find out more in this article.
Keeping up with the latest trends? Knowing which socio-cultural currents are moving the world? Keeping pace with technological developments? In an age of rapid change and crises following each other in quick succession, it can be a real challenge to stay up to date. For designers, the fluid transition from one social development to the next offers an inspiring variety of movements from which they can extract trends and turn them into tangible concepts. On this basis, the two designers Annie Kuschel, Global Head of Design Management at KURZ, and Julia König, Senior Designer at KURZ, have once again designed this year's trend boxes, ‘60° – creative boxes to inspire.’
Triangular, clear, iconic – the surfaces of the trend boxes meet at a 60-degree angle, opening up new perspectives. The packaging concept combines high-quality materials, state-of-the-art finishing technologies, and current design trends to create a holistic experience that can be enjoyed both visually and haptically.
The four trend themes ‘Shades of Armour: Resilience is the new weapon,’ ‘Average Hero: Normal is fine for me,’ ‘AntiThesis: New narratives for different perspectives,’ and ‘Sportify: Let the game do the talking!’ reflect current social trends, visualized through inspiring design concepts. "With the new designs, we want to inspire, inform, and appeal to the senses at the same time. The packaging series is based on our internal KURZ trend research, in which we observe which socio-cultural developments have an impact on the creative industry. The results tell complex stories in the form of our packaging and convey emotions at the same time," explains Annie Kuschel. The elaborate embossing on the design boxes was created using tools from KURZ subsidiary Hinderer + Mühlich. As with the previous collection, high-quality paper from manufacturer Koehler Paper was used again.
Average Hero: Normal is fine for me focuses on everyday life and invites us to appreciate it for what it is. Simple shapes, blind embossing, and subtle colors showcase the ordinary and give it meaning. Small details stand out, with surprising accents created through finishing. The trend color Plain Green LUXOR® 111617N is reminiscent of a peaceful walk in the woods, while Mundane Beige LUXOR® 111618N captures the atmosphere of everyday life with its warm, metallic matte effect. In addition, seemingly insignificant details are transformed into exciting patterns with surprising depth effects by SILVER LINE® Trivia.
Sportify: Let the game do the talking! brings movement to packaging design and reflects the Olympic ideal of bringing people together in their passion. Here, dynamism and rhythm are translated into visual design. Geometries reminiscent of playing field markings and transparent layers of color create movement, energy, and lightness. Ambitious Yellow LUMAFIN® 711 Yellow catches the eye, while Light Pink LUMAFIN® 761 conveys lightness and precision through transparent layers. The elements in the trend color SILVER LINE® Dotted emphasize the impression of rhythm and order that are constantly rearranging themselves.
Shades of Armour: Resilience is the new weapon symbolizes retreating to inner strength and visualizes resilience in a creative way. Dark silver and beige tones convey protection, stability, and inner balance. A grid structure is reminiscent of a mesh that provides security without constricting. The KURZ trend colors used support this effect: Protective Metal LUXOR® 110331 is a dark silver with a cool blue tint, LUMAFIN® 712 Beige covers all underlying layers like a multi-layered shell, and SILVER LINE® Closed is reminiscent of a stable mesh of steel cables that oscillates between static and dynamic.
AntiThesis: New narratives for different perspectives thrives on contrasts and opposites, which young people in particular are confronted with. This concept makes it clear that contrasts do not necessarily have to be conflicts. Instead, the tension between opposites becomes a source of creative energy. Materials, colors, and structures collide, contradict each other, and yet merge into a unity. SILVER LINE® Multiple symbolizes the confident handling of contradictions, while the trend color Unique Yellow COLORIT® 307098 appears restrained and at the same time subtly revolutionary. Hybrid Blue LUXOR® 111616, a metallic, high-gloss light blue, changes to reddish depending on the perspective, creating depth and movement.
KURZ aims to combine current trends, socially relevant topics, and state-of-the-art surface finishing and finishing technologies in captivating, unique designs. Each of the four small boxes exemplifies the aesthetic, functional approach to trends that are currently shaping the packaging industry. "The triangular shape opens up completely new possibilities for the interplay of light, shadow, and surface effects thanks to its unique geometry. This makes the three-dimensional effects of our finishes not only visible, but also tangible," explains Julia König. The second edition of LEONHARD KURZ's trend boxes, ‘60° – creative boxes to inspire,’ demonstrates one thing above all else: Those who understand trends and can translate them into tangible forms create inspiration that lasts.
